- Ever since I opened my coaching practice in 2008, I’ve noticed a significant, common theme among most of my clients. They are stuck in some type of grief that negatively impacts their work performance and overall quality of life. I’m talking about grief triggered by circumstances or significant life changes such as: job terminations, illnesses and unwanted health conditions, marital discord, financial loss, divorce, death, substance abuse, aging, physical appearance alterations, deteriorating elderly parents, mental health challenges, geographical moves, new jobs, empty nest syndrome. Until this grief—past or present—either gets reconciled or resolved, it saps your energy, erodes your confidence, and kills your joy. Unreconciled and unresolved grief adds unnecessary stress. Actually, it’s exhausting on a number of levels. And—it holds you back from being all that you are meant to be. Sometimes people are grieving and don’t even realize it. Could YOU be one of them? Is there a loss or life changing event that you don’t want to face? Or is there something you fully acknowledge but it rules your thoughts, consumes your feelings, and leaves you dull because you can’t get past it?
You don’t need to resign yourself to an existence of simmering misery. There is a way through it. If you are managing employees, I believe the most important job responsibility you have is to figure out how to FULLY ENGAGE each and every one of them. And—as an employee yourself—you need to FEEL engaged. Fully engaged staff are the life blood of a team, a department, and an entire organization. You must learn and master the keys to inspiring people to consistently do their best work, even under difficult circumstances. The sooner you know how to do this, the sooner you will reap the results you want. It’s that simple. At the risk of sounding trite: You can’t accomplish everything on your own. You need the folks who report to you to carry their weight—and to carry it willingly. They are getting paid to carry their weight, but YOU are getting paid to set the stage for them to do it.
To what extent are your employees engaged right now? What is standing between their current level of function and full engagement? While this may surprise you, it’s a fact that employee engagement begins with certain emotions. These emotions are the foundation for performance. Without exception, employee feelings precede decisions, choices, and actions. It’s your primary job to plant the seeds that produce the right feelings.
Organizations who report high levels of employee engagement are three times more efficient, effective, and profitable than those with average or low levels of engagement. As you may guess, there is a big price to pay for floating employees who simply are not engaged. All aspects of an organization are negatively impacted: finances, morale, service/product delivery, innovation, culture, and team spirit just to name a few.
