Insurance companies are also now specifying it as a part of responsible professional work. But what exactly does multicultural competency entail? In this webinar, Dr. Hedges focuses on social and psychological issues involved in cross-cultural diagnosis and therapy. Participants explore issues in urban life that affect cultural, racial, ethnic, and immigrant populations, and how clinicians can play an important role as cultural mentors and allies. The nature and role of difference, hatred, racism and other forms of discrimination and their impact on the physical and mental health of minority groups will also be reviewed, with special attention to the countertransference reactions that can manifest in the counseling session. Dr. Hedges is author of numerous papers and books including Cross-Cultural Encounters: Bridging Worlds of Difference (2013), Listening Perspectives in Psychotherapy (1983 & 2003), Interpreting the Countertransference (1992), Strategic Emotional Involvement (1996), and Facing the Challenge of Liability in Psychotherapy: Practicing Defensively (2000 & 2007).
