Description: There is added urgency when asking non-suicidal self-injurious children and adolescents, “Do you WANT help?” Dr. David Kamen will demonstrate how to use motivational interviewing to get them to accept the treatment that they desperately need.

Full Description:
By viewing non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) as an obsessive-compulsive and addictive problem, we have the basis for encouraging children and adolescents who engage in deliberate self-injury to seek help. We can apply motivational interviewing tactics, based on Prochaska and Diclimente’s (1983) stages of change or transtheoretical model (TTM) of Change, in an effort to get individuals to accept treatment for NSSI.

The DSM-5 now recognizes non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) as a serious childhood disorder worthy of further research and clinical examination. This webinar accepts that call to action by examining case studies and empirical literature, introducing participants to TTM and motivational interviewing steps and tactics, and providing methods for measuring NSSI treatment effectiveness.
