Description: Do you feel unqualified to help LGBT youths and their families? This webinar has tools to assist any clinician in promoting adjustment and acceptance.

Full Description:
The discovery that a child is gay or lesbian can send shockwaves throughout a family as long-held views about sexuality and relationships are upended, resulting in anger, resentment, and concern for safety and acceptance. However, in some families, learning that a child is gay can improve familial relationships, even if a parent initially reacts negatively.

In describing the findings and practice implications of a qualitative, multicultural study of 65 gay and lesbian children and their parents, Professor LaSala illustrates how reciprocal family interactions play a role in parental adjustment, and demonstrates how effective interventions can aid adjustment and strengthen these families.

Course Includes:
Live Q&A
Presentation Handout
Post session recording access
CE Credit

What You Will Learn:
List the special challenges that coming out LGBT youths face
Recall the five stages of family adjustment
Describe what parents and their children do that helps or hinders family adjustment for each stage
Assess how the challenges of youths and families from various ethnic/racial groups are similar and different
Intervene in ways that help families become closer and stronger as a result of the child’s coming out

Your Presenter:
Michael LaSala, PhD, LCSW, is an internationally recognized expert on gay and lesbian couple and family issues and has presented workshops, keynotes, and plenary presentations nationally and abroad.
